Mr. Algie L. Spencer

Mr. Algie Lewis Spencer, age 93, of Woolwine passed away Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 at The Landmark Center in Stuart. He was born on June 22, 1923 to the late George C. Spencer and Alice Shough Spencer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann Clark Spencer; a sister, Louise Hall; and seven brothers, Richard, Amos, Frank, Cecil, Homer, Raymond, and James Spencer. Mr. Spencer served in the US Army during WWII; was a longtime member of Woolwine United Methodist Church; and was a member of American Legion Post #105. He received his Bachelors and Masters in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had been a Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Woolwine High School for 19 years, Principal at Woolwine High School for 3 years, Vocational Director at Patrick County High School for 6 years, Visiting Teacher at the School Board Office for 14 years, and retired in 1990 with 42 years of service in the Public School System.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Stuart Smith of Greensboro, NC; a son, Jeff Spencer of Woolwine; and four grandchildren, Morgan Owen and husband, John, Spencer Smith, Jacob Smith, and Molly Cribari and husband, Nathaniel.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 22, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Woolwine United Methodist Church with Rev. Sandy Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.
