Mr. Benjamin Herbert "Ben Junior" Harris, Jr., age 83 of Meadows of Dan, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 2, 2008, at the Wheatland Retirement Community in Hillsville. He was born in Patrick County on December 2, 1924 to the late Benjamin Herbert Harris and Claudia Agee Harris Wood. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Harris and Rufus Wood; and his stepfather, George Wood. He had served in the United States Army during World War II, and had been a mechanic. He was a longtime member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church where he served as deacon and trustee.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Lawrence Harris of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wilburn Harris of Marion and Walter and Patsy Harris of Meadows of Dan; one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Pat Thomas of Durham, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Matthew Harris, Andrew Harris, Phillip Bridges, Ben G. Harris, Pamela Harris Holt and Angela Harris; four great-grandchildren, Kelsey Harris, Carson Harris, Nicole Bridges and Brooklyn Holt; two brothers, Esmond Harris of Vinton and Claude Wood of Danville; and one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Jim Hodges of Roanoke.
Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Revs. Jack Holland, Clarence Marshall and Michael Shockley officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, and at other times at the homeplace on Blacksmith Road in Meadows of Dan.
