Mr. Bert Sylvester Gilley, Jr

Mr. Bert Sylvester Gilley, Jr., age 93 of Stuart, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at his home. He was born on July 24, 1919 in Cascade, Virginia to the late Bert Sylvester Gilley, Sr. and Dora Fulcher Gilley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gilley was preceded in death by his step-mother, Hulda Biggs Gilley; a brother, Curtis Gilley; and three sisters, Gladys Gilley Dalton, Elizabeth Gilley Wray and Glenna Gilley Brown.
Bert is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ethlyne Martin Gilley of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Gilley Schwarting and Henry of Stuart; three grandchildren and spouses, Sean and Katie Schwarting, Ian and Kim Schwarting and Heather Schwarting; four great-grandchildren, Alexis, Carl, Claire Ellen and Evan Schwarting; two half-sisters, Mary Lee Jessie and Imogene Gilley Dillon, both of Martinsville; and two half-brothers, Shirley Gilley of Stuart and Elton Gilley of Collinsville.
Bert was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Army for 3 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 7800 and the American Legion. He worked for Twin Ford and Stanley Chevrolet. He was a member of Stuart Presbyterian Church where he served as trustee, deacon, elder and elder emeritus. He was an avid square dancer and a member of the Happy Tracks Club. He traveled to many states to attend National Square Dance conventions.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Stuart Presbyterian Church with Rev. Danny Redman and Dr. Bucky Hunsicker officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
