Mr. Bobby Lee Martin

Mr. Bobby Lee Martin, loving and beloved son, husband, father and grandfather, got to go home on January 23, 2016. He was born in Stokes County, NC, on October 28, 1941 to the late James Robert and Grace Hawks Mayes Martin. Mr. Martin attended various elementary schools and Lowgap High School. He served his country as a military policeman from 1964 to 1966. He completed his GED while serving in the military and followed that up with classes through the University of Maryland, Surry Community College, Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company School and Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company School. Mr. Martin then discovered he much preferred selling automobiles over insurance. This occupation he continued until the time of his death. Bob worked for Burton Dodge before becoming self-employed as a wholesale car dealer. Finally, for the past six years, Bob and his son Kevin have worked together in retail auto sales with his wife Kay and his daughter Michele providing office support. Mr. Martin enjoyed many years as a member of the Mt. Airy Church of Christ. Then, in 1997, he became a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he was privileged to serve, enjoy fellowship, and loved to sing in the choir. Mr. Martin was married for 51+ years to Katherine Lowe Martin. They were well blessed through life with three children and their subsequent families, their first-born Michele Martin Hunter and her husband, the late Robert Craig Hunter, their middle child Kevin Taylor Martin and his wife, Letitia Anne Martin and their third child Robin Martin Shore and her husband, Kevin James Shore. In 1991, Bob became “Gramps” and was forever smitten with his nine grandchildren, Robert Craig Hunter, Jr.(24), William Gaines Hunter (22), Grey Worthington Hunter (20), Mary Grace Hunter (18), William Jackson Martin (17), Avery Nicole Martin (10), Cameron Martin Shore (18), James William Scott Shore (14), and Tristen Skyler Shore (12). Gramps always enjoyed his chosen profession, but he also enjoyed many other things in life. He loved playing golf with friends and ultimately was overjoyed to play golf with his grandchildren. He had a passion for helping others and enjoyed his service as a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Gramps was an excellent fishing partner, problem solver and friend to his grandchildren and all of his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded on the Martin side by brothers, Tollie, Elwood, Alonzo; and sisters, Shelley, Mary, Clara and Cleo. On the Mayes side he was also preceded by Howard, Curtis, Leon, Lawrence and Hazel. Mr. Martin is survived by Norman Martin and Lena Mayes Layell. Funeral services will be held at 1:15 PM on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Ewell Vernon, Rev. Russell Parsons and Rev. Wayne Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 68, Lowgap, NC 27024.
