Mr. Buddy Gary Pendleton

The angel band came for Patrick County bluegrass fiddler, Buddy Pendleton, Friday evening, March 24, 2017 to bear him away to his immortal home. Buddy, age 81, of Woolwine was born in Patrick County to the late Roscoe N. Pendleton and Mabel Hopkins Pendleton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kaye P. Rorrer; and a brother, Bruce Pendleton. Buddy loved trees and all of nature and was a steward of the land. His lifelong career as a rural mail carrier enabled him to enjoy his cherished Blue Ridge Mountains. He connected with people through the universal language of music and his particular passion was for what he called “mountain jazz.” People were drawn to his complex tune variations played in an effortless long bow style.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Jean Byers Pendleton of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Joby Kauffman of Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Vivian and Joel Kauffman; one sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Philip Plaster of Patrick Springs; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bob and Paula Pendleton of Patrick Springs, Lane Pendleton of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Danny Redman officiating. Burial will follow in the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery where the family would like to invite all musicians who knew and loved Buddy and his music, to bring instruments to the graveside service for a memorial jam. Three familiar hymns (Will the Circle Be Unbroken, I’ll Fly Away and I Saw the Light) will be played as part of the committal service. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 122, Woolwine, VA 24185.
