Mr. Cecil Willie Wood, age 85 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at his home. He was born in Meadows of Dan on May 6, 1925 to the late Cecil Alexander and Byrda Shelor Wood. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. "Becky" Shelor Wood; a sister, Iris Wood Stanley and her husband, Luther B. Stanley, Sr., a brother, Duke Willard Wood; and a nephew, Jeffery Elwood Stanley. He served in the United States Army Air Corps-8th Air Force during World War II as a Technical Sergeant assigned to the 389th Bomb Group, and flew 18 missions on the B24 Liberator. He retired from the US Postal Service with 37 years of service, of those he served for 18 years as Post Master of the Meadows of Dan Post Office. He was a charter member of the Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department and served as their first president. He was a member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and also served on the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery Committee. He was a life member of VFW Post #8467.
Mr. Wood is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Dula Belle Wood Agee, and William "Bill" Agee of Patrick Springs, one sister-in-law, Joy Agee Wood of Wytheville; four nieces: Peggy S. Barkley; Catheryn S. Vaughn and husband, Mike; Suzanne W. Renegar and husband, Ed; Sheri W. Martin and husband, Randy; five nephews: Luther B. Stanley, Jr. and wife, Ann; Darrell Agee and wife, Linda; Gregory Wood and wife, Denise; Kevin Wood and wife, Suzanna; Warren Agee; eight great-nieces and twelve great-nephews; eleven great-great-nieces and seven great-great-nephews; two great-great-great nieces and five great-great-great- nephews.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Peggy, Catheryn and Mike for the loving and dedicated care of their Uncle Willie. The family also wishes to acknowledge and thank his two caregivers, Amanda and Mary, and the Mountain Valley Hospice for their excellent care.
Funeral services for Mr. Wood will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Shockley and Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church.
