Mr. Cephus Henry Via, age 76 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2008. He was born in Patrick County on June 8, 1932 to the late Mose and Rosabelle Wimbush Via. In addition to his parents, Mr. Via was preceded in death by a grandchild, Yolanda Akridge; two brothers, James Via and Clinton Via, and one sister, Vera Ball. He was retired from Bassett Chair Industries and had served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Iron Belt Christian Church, where he served as an Elder, and was a member of the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard and the Fairystone Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chaplain for both organizations.
Mr. Via is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lucy Barbour Via of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhona and Curtis Hairston of Stuart; one granddaughter, Akessa Smith, of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and her husband, Gunnery Sgt. Robert Lee Smith, III, who is stationed in Afghanistan; one great-grandson, Robert Lee Smith, IV; three sisters, Pauline Moore, Carnelia Gaines and Christine McAllister, all of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Via will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Carroll Rucker officiating. Burial will follow in the Iron Belt Christian Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
