On Tuesday, August 15, 2017, Charles Henry Key, age 69, of Mountain Park departed his earthly home to join his heavenly father. He left behind to treasure his memory, his adoring wife, Marsha Sloan Key and his step- daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Jessie Fletcher, with whom Henry developed a special loving relationship. Henry was a true cowboy in every sense of the word. He awed children and adults alike with his beautiful horses and intriguing reigning patterns where he showed throughout the United States, often assisted by his special friend, WA Jenkins. He owned and operated his own grading business “Henry Key Grading” for more than 40 years and did the grading on many sites in the piedmont triad. He was a self-taught grading professional who created his own business and was instrumental in changing much of the topographies. Henry was a very special person with many qualities, hardworking Christian man, a “gentle giant,” real-life cowboy. He loved raising and showing horses. He had a special dedication to children and donated many hours to building and working at Upland Children’s Camp. He blazed the trail for the “Mountains to the Sea Trail” primarily at the Wells Knob area excited and stimulated by the venture. He and his wife were members of Yadkin Valley Trail riding Association and hosted two events at their home to raise money to benefit the trail. Members named it the “Henry Ride.” Mr. Key was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle Key and Ruby Cockerham Key; and a brother, Joe Key. He is survived by a daughter, Blair Carter; a son, Marcus Key and his wife, Sara; and grandchildren, Ella Carter, Benjamin Carter, Addison Key and Griffin Key. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Mitch Smith will officiate the services. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm until the time of the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Upland Children's Camp. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Key family.
