Mr. Charles Roscoe Kirkman, 82, of Mt. Airy passed away at Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. He was born in Surry County on July 18, 1934 to the late Thomas Roscoe and Ruth Josephine Jones Kirkman. He bravely served in the U.S. Army and retired from teaching carpentry at Surry Central High. Mr. Kirkman was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed trips to the beach, riding his tractor and cherished spending time with his great grandchildren. He is survived by four daughters, Candis Swicegood, Ginger Kirkman Werner and husband, Bill, Pepper Mayes and husband, John, and Robin Osborne; grandchildren, Brianna Mayes, Charles Cody Swicegood, Alex “PooDoo” Mayes, Dalton Mayes, Emily Osborne and Trey Overby, Airel Phillips and Tyler Mayes; two great grandchildren, Eleia Mayes and Luke Mayes; and a brother, Robert Lee Kirkman and wife, Brenda; a sister-in-law, Judy Kirkman; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kirkman was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda Jo Barnes Kirkman and a brother, James C. Kirkman. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM on February 4, 2017 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. A private interment will be held with full military honors by VFW Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.
