Mr. Charles Sumner

Mr. Charles Cecil Sumner, age 78 of Mt. Airy, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Sumner was born in Surry County on December 18, 1935 to Wilford and Cora Thomas Sumner. He was well known for his excellent carpentry skills and enjoyed being a part of "The Blue Ridge Campers" and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Sumner will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Surviving are his wife, Dora Anderson Sumner; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry Sumner and very special friend, Judy Willard and Danny and April Sumner; grandchildren Catlin Sumner, Carley Sumner and Jennifer Laws and husband Kris; a great granddaughter, Covia Laws; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Georgie Sumner and Leroy and Bonnie Sumner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sumner was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Belinda Sumner; sisters, Pauline Sumner and Margaret Nichols and brothers, George L. Sumner and Clarence Sumner. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, June 27, 2014 at Highland Park Baptist Church by Dr. Darrell Tate and Rev. Israel Easter. Burial will follow in New Venture Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Highland Park Baptist Church on Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a very special thank you to Linda Collins for her devoted care during Mr. Sumner's illness.
