Mr. Charles Franklin Taylor

Mr. Charles Franklin Taylor, 88, of Lowgap passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born in Weaverton, MD on September 9, 1927 to the late Bernard and Mary Coulter Taylor. He was a member of Day Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Taylor served with the 2nd Marine Division, as a Corporal, and was deployed to Japan in 1945, during WWII. He later served with the 1st Marine Division deployed to China. After returning back to the states, he was a baseball pitcher for Camp Pendleton, Marine team, where they won the all Navy Championship. He was always proud of his baseball record of 22 wins and 4 losses as a part of the Marine team. Upon his honorable discharge in 1948, he signed a contract to pitch for the Pittsburg Pirates, an injury to his shoulder shortened his baseball career. He retired from the United States Postal Service after thirty years of service. He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Hodges Taylor of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Jan Taylor of Lowgap; grandchildren and spouses, Ashley and Bobby Talbott of Lowgap, Allison and Brad Harris; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Dan Dosé of Alexandra, VA; a sister-in-law, Susan Taylor of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Gary Snow of Mt. Airy, Faye Comer of Dobson, Billy Ray and Shelby Hodges of Lowgap; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Taylor, and his wife’s parents, Elmer and Mary Ella Hodges, two brothers-in-law, Delmore Comer and Bobby Hodges. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Brother Roger Pickett, Brother Ricky Crouse and Rev. Jonathan Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Friday, June 17, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beulah United Methodist Cemetery Fund, c/o David Whitfield, 266 Raven Knob Rd., Mt. Airy, NC 27030; Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030, or to Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice, Janene Moss, and Joseph Smith for all the love and care they have given to the family during this sad time. A special thank you to Dr. Dodd and his nurse Tammy, and also to Dr. Kinsley and the staff of the Woltz Hospice Home. The family would also like to thank all of their family, friends, and neighbors for the love, prayers, and support they have shown during this time.
