Mr. Clarence Alton “Al” Peavy, age 86 of Mount Airy, NC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Peavy was born in Vienna, GA, June 20, 1931 to the late Clinton and Irma Carlisle Peavy. He graduated from Georgia Tech University in 1953 with a BS in Management and Engineering. After receiving a Commission in the United States Navy, he married his college sweetheart, Margaret Ann Yarbrough. Al served two years with the 6th Fleet in the Atlantic area of operations. He starred on the US Naval Basketball Team and played in ports around the world. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in 1955. He and his family moved to Mount Airy in 1960 to join the management team at Perry Manufacturing where he worked until his retirement in 1988. Later he was a consultant with Renfro Corporation until retiring in 1999. Mr. Peavy was involved with the Mount Airy Youth Foundation (MAYF), serving as President from 1986 until 2003. He remained an active board member and continued to serve the interest of Mount Airy students and student athletes. He was instrumental in establishing a “one of a kind” program that allows every student in the Mount Airy School System to attend all regular season sporting events for free. Under his leadership, the MAYF has raised almost two million dollars and just recently he had a key role in in the acquisition of the new scoreboard at the Wallace Shelton Stadium. In recognition for his lifetime of service and achievements in the community, Mr. Peavy was inducted into the Mount Airy Hall of Fame in 2004. He attended Christ Community Church in Mount Airy. Surviving are one daughter and three sons, Beverly, Bradley, Ken, and Kris. Beverly Ann and Tom Simpson of Rock Hill, SC and their two sons, Benjamin Simpson and Ryan Simpson; Bradley and Leslie B. Peavy of Burlington, NC, and their children, Elizabeth and Forrest Tabor and their daughter Geddings, Alex and Collins Peavy and their son Winston, Grace and Matt Hanley, and Eric Peavy; Kenneth and Robin T. Peavy of Mount Airy, NC and their children Nicholas Peavy and Sydney Anne Peavy; Kris and Laura M. Peavy of Charlotte, NC and their children, Colby Peavy and Ava Jane Peavy; niece, Patsy Peavy Karr of Newnan, GA; and nephew, Marcus Peavy of Atlanta, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Yarbrough Peavy; one sister; and three brothers. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:30 AM at Moody Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy with Dr. David Brady officiating. The Peavy family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 until 11:30 AM. A private burial will be held in Oakdale Cemetery. Donations may be made in his name to the Mount Airy Youth Foundation, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
