Former Clerk of the Circuit Court of Patrick County, David G. Hanby, age 91, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born in Patrick County on March 18, 1925, the son of the late Harden D. and Nellie H. Hanby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel H. Hawks.
He graduated from Stuart High School in 1943 and left shortly thereafter for the Army, where he served for 2½ years. He was enlisted in the Army’s Amphibian Engineers, 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment and participated in three D-Day assault landings during the New Guinea campaign. He then served in the Philippines and with the occupation force in Japan. After his return from the Army, he was employed by First National Bank for 13 years. Following that, in 1959, he was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court of Patrick County to fill an unexpired term. He was then elected to that office for four terms before his retirement in 1989. He served as President of the Virginia Court Clerks Association from 1974 to 1975. He was a 50 year member of the Rotary Club and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1985. He also served on the Board of Directors at Suntrust Bank, and was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. for 50 years. A lifelong Methodist, he was a member of Stuart United Methodist Church and served on the Administrative Board, Finance Committee and Trustees. After moving to Kings Grant in Martinsville in 1997, he became a member of The First United Methodist Church of Martinsville.
Mr. Hanby is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dean Morris Hanby of Martinsville; his daughter, Barbara Reed “Bobbie” Hanby and her husband, Rod Acuff of Roanoke; a brother, Joseph P. Hanby of Stuart; a nephew, Larry Hawks of Stuart; and a niece, Susan H. Painter of Danville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Keith Richie and Chaplain Paul Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow at Patrick Memorial Gardens with a flag presentation by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
