Mr. David Elliot Poole

Mr. David Elliot Poole, age 88 of Mount Airy, died Sunday July 3, 2016, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Poole was born in Rowan County, April 11, 1928 the son of the late Pleasant Van and Cornelia Poole. Mr. Poole grew up at The Children’s Home in Winston-Salem and graduated from Reynolds High School, and Davidson College. David excelled in athletics where he was one of few athletes to have made All-State in three sports, football, basketball, and baseball. His outstanding play earned him a contract with the Cincinnati Reds where he played several years in the high minor leagues. He retired to be a student and was the head baseball coach at Davidson College where he received his degree. He was elected to the “Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame” in 1989. He was retired from Metropolitan Life, and after retirement he managed Northwood Apartments for 20 years. Mr. Poole was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. Surviving are his wife, Frances Williamson Poole of the home; two sons and daughters in law, David and Susan Poole of Pinnacle, Mike Poole of Greensboro, and Cindy H. Poole of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Kenneth and Katie Poole, Matthew and Samantha Poole, Jacob Poole, Casey Poole, Ashley P. and Taylor Walker, Alex Poole, Katherine Poole Hayes, and Lizzie Poole; his great grandchildren, Luke Poole, Tyler Poole, Waylon Walker, Lillie Reese Walker, Parker Hayes, and Ashton Hayes. Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his son Steve Poole, and numerous brothers and sisters. A visitation for family and friends will be held, Thursday July 7, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children’s Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Moody Funeral Service is serving the Poole family.
