Dennis Cecil Mabe, 88, of Stuart died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Lawsonville, N.C., April 2, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy (Dot) Vernon Mabe; his parents, Lelah and Bertie Mabe; and brothers, Millard and Wayne Mabe.
Dennis is survived by his daughter, Dr. Cheryl Mabe Turner, and husband, John Randolph Turner, of Roanoke; brother, Orville Neal Mabe, and wife, Gracie, of Madison, N.C.; sister-in-law, Peggy Pickard Carter, and husband, Eugene D. Carter, of Greensboro, N.C.; and nephews and nieces: Tim, Mike, Kathy, and Debbie.
Dennis was a man of commitment. He was a veteran of World War II, having served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from April, 1943, through January, 1946, on the mid-class carrier, U.S.S. Cabot. He was a devoted member of Stuart Baptist Church where he was ordained originally as a Deacon in 1978, followed by the designation of Deacon Emeritus in 2005 for his many years of service. For 55 years he was a Mason of Mountain Home Lodge No. 263. In addition, he was the owner and operator of Western Auto on Main Street in Stuart for approximately 30 yearsa"a livelihood he cherished day by day because of the friendships he built year after year.
Family and friends will celebrate his life during his funeral, Thursday, December 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home, 202 West Blue Ridge Street, Stuart. The Rev. Robert Belcher will officiate. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Mountain Home Lodge No. 263, and Military Rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
