Mr. Donald Warren Dowdy, age 87 of Mt. Airy, entered into the more immediate presence of the Lord on Friday, December 19, 2014. Mr. Dowdy was born in Durham County on June 18, 1927 to Carlton Daniel and Clara Oakley Dowdy. He was a dedicated member of Grace Moravian Church where he was known not only for his devotion to God and his church but also for his gentle smile that projected love for everyone he encountered. He was a Volunteer Fireman with Four Way Fire Dept., a volunteer at Northern Hospital, a school crossing guard for Jones Elementary School, he was instrumental in organizing the community watch program in several areas as well as serving on the board of Crime Stoppers and he was also an Auxiliary Deputy with the Surry County Sheriff's Dept. for 40 years. He was probably the most loyal attendee of the Morning Coffee Drinkers and the Brotherhood of Grace Moravian. He will be sorely missed by his family and many, many friends throughout the community. Surviving is his devoted wife of nearly sixty five years, Ola Mae Sands Dowdy; daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Anthony Carter and Sheryl Angel; sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Florena Dowdy, Bob and Scarlett Dowdy and Sam Dowdy; grandchildren, David Carter and wife, Christy, Jessica Carter, Shantel Jay-Peterson and husband, Jayson, Danny Dowdy, Kayla Miller and husband Cameron, Meredith Dowdy and Oshyn Bryant; great grandchildren, D. J. Carter, Madison Carter, Leilani Jay-Peterson, Hannah Jay-Peterson, Keana Dowdy and Rolyn Miller. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dowdy was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Dowdy and brothers, C. D. Dowdy, Cecil Dowdy and Arthur Dowdy. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 22, 2014 at Grace Moravian Church by Rev. Jennie Leake-Hemrick and Rev. Charles Fishel. Burial will follow in God's Acre. The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Moravian Church at 1401 N. Main St. Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
