Mr. E. Bernard Bowles, age 90 of Bassett, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was born on Nov. 12, 1919 in Patrick County to the late Charles William Bowles and Carrie Lou Spencer Bowles. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Bowles, Bessie Via, Bertha Washburn; and six brothers, Sell, Kell, Everett, Claude, Lannie, and Layman Bowles. Mr. Bowles served in the US Army during WWII as a Military Policeman, and had worked at Fieldcrest Mills.
Surviving are two daughters and sons in law, Gail and Joe Britt of Smithfield, VA and Debra and James Perdue of Patrick Springs; six grandchildren, Tony Thompson, Kim Taylor, Mike Turner, Jr., Gerald Overby, Josh Perdue, Ashley Perdue; three great grandchildren, Cassidy Taylor, Angela Blake, Wesley Blake; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Rick Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bowles Family Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
