Mr. Eddie Carson Dorsett Jr, 92, of Mt. Airy, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Surry Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 13, 1924 to the late Eddie Carson and Bessie Hunt Dorsett. Mr. Dorsett was raised in a loving family that took in two cousins who were raised as his brothers. He grew up in the depression era as a child and moved to Mt. Airy to play baseball. Eddie was a standout baseball player, recruited by the Dodgers while in high school but due to an injury that resulted in the loss of his right eye he was unable to play for the Dodgers and was recruited to play for the Mt. Airy Graniteers in 1946. He was later inducted into the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame and The Greater Mt. Airy Hall of Fame. After baseball Mr. Dorsett worked for Spencers Babywear as a sales representative. On September 16, 1949 he married the love of his life Mrs. Frances Parker whom he was married to for 49 years before her passing. In the early 60’s Eddie ran Brad’s Cards and Toy Store and went on to own and operate Eddie Zip Foods and Laundry Mat which he ran in the 70’s and 80’s. He was a member of Grace Moravian Church the church where he and his wife were married, and he served as a trustee, a member of the John Walker Sunday school class, and a member of the men’s brotherhood. Mr. Dorsett was a charter member of the Elks Lodge #2061, the White Pines Country Club as well as Renfro Masonic Lodge # 691where he has been a member since 1958. Eddie was also a past president of Surry Shrine Club, and a former member of the Shriner mini truckers. Left to cherish his memories are sons and daughters in-law; Brad and Jean Dorsett, Jimmy and Janet Dorsett; six grandchildren; Carson and Jason Dorsett, Kimberly Jones, Cindy Adams, Parker and Lee Stevens; twelve great- grandchildren; two brothers and sisters in-law; Thomas and Opal Dorsett, Donald and Ruth Dorsett, and a special friend Wavey Mabry. As well as his parents Mr. Dorsett was preceded in death by his wife Frances Parker Dorsett, two sisters Eunice Morris, and Ruth Hilton. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Grace Moravian Church with the Rev. Neil Routh officiating. Burial will follow in God's Acre cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until time for the service. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the John Walker Sunday School Class in care of Grace Moravian Church 1401 North Main Street, Mt Airy NC. 27030
