Mr. Eddie Gray Shumate

Eddie Gray Shumate “Ham”, 51, life long resident and General Contractor of Elkin, NC passed away unexpectantly February 28, 2018 with family by his side at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Eddie was a Master Carpenter and owned Shumate Construction, INC. He built with his heart and that was conveyed in each project he completed. He loved farm life and accomplished his retirement goal of establishing a commercial poultry operation as a Perdue Pullet Grower. His love for the outdoors, hunting and the Rocky Mountains fueled a passion for annual elk hunts and the opportunity to meet so many friends and acquaintances over the years that remained dear to his heart. As a true outdoorsman, Eddie fully respected nature and the beauty of God’s creation and embraced every moment he was able to enjoy it. He enjoyed horse-back riding, kayaking, four wheeling, and archery. Eddie was preceded in death by his father, Conard Shumate. Survivors include his wife, Lorie Ann Shumate, his loving Mother, Louie York Shumate, two sons, Austin Shumate, 19, Ethan Shumate, 17, step-daughter Emma Garland, 16 and step-son Bryce Garland, 14. Sister, Monette Swaim and husband Bill of Hamptonville. Brother Kenneth Shumate and wife Delores of Elkin. Several nephews including Dallas Snow and wife Saige, Dan Snow, Mark Shumate, John Shumate and wife Carley. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 3, 2018 at noon at Union Cross Baptist Church, 2034 Twin Oaks Rd, Elkin. The funeral service will follow at 2:00pm with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. Officiating Reverends include Tim Burton, Curtis Ponder, and Tom Parker.
