Mr. Elmer Lee Elgin, age 78 of Stuart, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Henry County on December 5, 1932 to the late Lynn and Era Conner Elgin. He was a long time member of Ross Harbour United Methodist Church, where he was a superintendent for several years, a song leader, and had served on many of the church boards. He was a member of Smith River Rescue Squad, which he and his wife, Christine, helped to organize, and where he had been captain for a while.
Mr. Elgin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christine Foley Elgin of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Lucille Elgin of Stuart; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dickie Wood of Stuart; five grandchildren; Kevin Lee Elgin, C.L. Elgin, Christina Hubbard, BrianWood and Shane Wood; one great-grandchild, Martina Hubbard; two brothers, Walter Elgin of Martinsville and Donald Elgin of Stuart; and a sister, Verna Kruse of Stuart.
A private graveside service will be held in Ross Harbour United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor David Westmoreland and Rev. Luther Hopkins officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 122, Woolwine, Virginia 24185. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the services.
