Mr. Ernest Augustus Randleman, Jr

Ernest Augustus Randleman, Jr., 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, November 28th at Ridgecrest Assisted Living in Mount Airy. He was born in Surry County on June 8, 1926 to the late Ernest Augustus Randleman, Sr. and Stella James Randleman. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Catherine Carter Randleman, as well as his siblings James, Charles and Mary Frances Randleman. Ernie and Catherine were married in 1951 and enjoyed 55 years of marriage. Ernie is survived by eleven loving nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law, Louise Randleman (widow of James Randleman) and Frances Randleman (widow of Charles Randleman). Ernie graduated from Mt. Airy High School where he played football. He attended Duke University’s Navy flight program and then served in the US Navy. He later attended Wake Forest University where he earned a BS degree. He worked for the CIA and lived in Mexico for a short time. He received a degree in pharmacy at George Washington University in 1961. Ernie owned and operated Randleman Drugs in Mount Airy for 27 years with his wife Catherine. Randleman Drugs was located one block from the Mount Airy High School, and it was a favorite gathering spot for students and adults. It was a quintessential pharmacy that exists only in our memories today. He served as a volunteer pharmacist for many years with Surry Medical Ministries. Ernie loved spending time with his many friends and family, and he was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church. He loved to golf, travel, read, entertain others with stories and jokes, and vacation at the beach with his nieces Susan Richardson, Nancy Inman, Beverly Hay and Lou Ashby Young. He was a founding member of the Surry County Literary Society. Special thanks are extended to the many people who cared for Ernie during the last months of his life at Ridgecrest. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 3:00 at Central United Methodist Church on N Main Street with Pastor Mark Muckler officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ridgecrest Activities fund (1000 Ridgecrest Ln, Mt Airy, NC 27030) or Mountain Valley Hospice (1000 Ridgecrest Ln, Mt Airy, NC 27030).
