Mr. F. Curtis Hylton

Mr. F. Curtis Hylton, age 89 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Floyd County on July 23, 1922 to the late John Hylton and Melissa Ellen Weeks Hylton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hylton was preceded in death by three brothers, Frederick, Ralph and G.W. Hylton, and one sister, Elizabeth Bolt. Mr. Hylton was a member of Laurel Branch Church of the Brethren and attended Mountain View United Methodist Church. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II through more than two years of combat with the first Marine division, seventh battalion. He joined the first division after Guadalcanal, then made every major landing with the first Marines. Two of the engagements included Peleliu and Okinawa. He served with the combat division until he came home from China, and was called back to serve in the Korean conflict. He was a mechanic, welder and farmer.
Mr. Hylton is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lillian Helms Hylton of the home; two daughters, Anne Shelor Taylor, and her husband, Todd, and Linda Hylton, all of Meadows of Dan; three grandchildren, Cheminne Taylor-Smith, Lane Songer and Jinna Smith; five great-grandchildren, Aana Taylor-Smith, Cole Songer, Nicholas Smith, Jacob Smith and Emory Smith; and one sister, Shirley Richards of Floyd. He was adopted as a "special dad" by a "3rd" daughter, Gail Harding of Patrick Springs.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Pastor Terry Martin and Pastor Jerry Hylton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. If desired, memorials may be made to the Patrick County Community Food Bank, P.O.
