Fred Folger, Jr, age 90, of Mt. Airy, NC died peacefully at his home Tuesday, December 13, 2016. Fred was born in Mt. Airy, on June 14, 1926 the son of Fred Folger, Sr. and Mary Mills Fawcett Folger. After graduation form Mt., Airy High School in 1943 where he was a standout football and baseball player for the Granite Bears. he was recruited to play football and baseball at Duke University in 1943. While at Duke, Fred earned the nickname "Fearless Freddie" because of his athletic prowess on the football and baseball fields. After serving two years in the US Navy (1944-46) he returned to Duke to finish his undergraduate studies. Fred was recruited by the Pittsburg Steelers and the San Francisco Forty-Niners, but decided instead to continue his education at Duke University Law School. Fred and his wife Elizabeth Murray met while students at Duke and were married in 1952. They moved to Mt. airy in 1953 when he joined the family law firm and practiced law until his retirement in 2009., His was a life of public service and dedication. Fred served as State Senator for four terms in the North Carolina General Assembly. (1969-1974, 1993-94) He also served as Surry County Attorney for 42 years. He served on a number of and was appointed to numerous state and local committees and boards including: NC Local Government Commission, Disciplinary Hearing Committee, Bank of America (NCNB), 1st National Bank, Surry County Democratic Party, NC Bar Association, Surry County Bar Association, Surry County Health Foundation, and the Morehead Scholarship Foundation Selection Committee. Fred was an active member of Central United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy. He was a long-term member of the Mt. Airy Rotary Club, serving on the Board of Directors and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Folger was named to the Mt. Airy Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and to the Surry County Hall of Fame in 2008. Additionally, Fred’s enjoyed coaching young men on the Mt. Airy Football Field, spending time with his wife, Lib and his adoring daughters, golfing with his friends and greeting everyone he met with a smile and a twinkle in eyes. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Murray Folger. Mr. Folger is survived by his beloved sister, Barbara Folger Chatham; his loving daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Mills Borden, and husband Lee, of Goldsboro, NC, Beth Cashion and husband Bobby of Davidson, NC, his adoring grandchildren, Will and Elizabeth Borden and Spencer and Folger Cashion. In addition, Fred is survived by his devoted friend, Sallie Armfield McMillon and his lifelong friend, Ernie Randleman. Special thanks are extended to all the many people in Mt. Airy who cared for Fred in his later years, especially his friends Rhonda Cochran, Jill Simpson and the staff of Cross Creek Country Club. Funeral services will be held Friday, December16, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy by Rev. Mark Muckler and Rev. Julian Aldridge, Jr. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The Folger family will receive friends at their home, 206 North Park Avenue, Mt. Airy, NC 27030 on Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
