Mr. George Vernon Utt, 78, of Mt. Airy passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at his home. He was born in Carroll County, VA on May 9, 1938 to the late George and Hattie McMillian Utt. He attended Hillsville High School. Mr. Utt proudly served our country in the United States Army in Korea as military police, and was a member of the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. Mr. Utt worked at Protor Silex in Mt. Airy for several years before being appointed Post Master at the Cana, VA post office in 1967 where he served for 27 years before his retirement in 1992. He was an NHSC auxiliary volunteer for several years. Vernon was a friend to all who knew him and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Harold Utt of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and David Broyles; sons and daughters in-law, David and Penny Utt, Andy and Kim Utt; grandchildren, Sarah Broyles, Daphne Utt, Matthew Broyles, Logan Utt, Anthony Utt, Tyler Utt; step grandchildren, Cody Atkins, Jordan Atkins, Chandler Snyder; special great granddaughter, Kaebry Broyles; step great grandchildren, Alexis Atkins, Madison Atkins, Blaze Atkins; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lonnie and Mabel Utt, Wallace and Movita Utt, brother-in-law, Melvin Hiatt, sister-in-law, Louise Utt; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Utt was preceded in death by a son, George Vernon Utt Jr.; sisters, Ola Utt Haynes, and Vergie Utt Hiatt; brothers, Leonard Utt, Jim Utt, and Edsel Utt. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 20, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Highland Park Baptist Church with Dr. Darrell Tate, the Rev. Ed Bowman, and the Rev. Bob Josey officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Cana, VA. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 PM until time for the service at Highland Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Highland Park Baptist Church Building Fund, 1325 Grove Ln., Mt. Airy, NC 27030, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
