Mr. Grover Morton McKinney

Mr. Grover Morton McKinney, age 85 of Lowgap, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. McKinney was born in Carroll County on July 25, 1927 to Grover Thomas and Mabel Carlon McKinney. He proudly served our country as a Medic in the United States Army during WWII. Mr. McKinney absolutely loved his profession of truck driving. He retired from his dream job after thirty five combined years with Hennis Freight Lines, Spector Red Ball and Merita Bread Co. He logged millions of miles without a single accident for which he received several safe driving awards. He was a member of the Local Teamsters 391. After retirement he continued his love of driving by delivering cars for Scenic Ford. Mr. McKinney was a 32nd degree mason and a member of Salem Masonic Lodge AF & AM #289. In addition to being a mason Mr. McKinney was also involved in the Shriners Organization. He had a love of blue grass music and flat footing. He especially loved piddling with his old cars and just enjoying the great outdoors on his own property. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Boone McKinney of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Tresa and Paul Yarbrough of Winston-Salem; Tammy and John Slate of Kernersville; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Melanie McKinney of Birmingham, AL; Tyler and Lona McKinney of Clemmons; step children, Steve Beaver and wife Gwen of Land O Lakes, FL; Delores Williams and husband Jeff of Spring Hill, FL; Donna Nelson and husband Dan of NY; Diana Hinson and husband Jerry of Florence, SC; Debra Beaver and Roy of Lowgap; James Beaver of Spring Hill, FL; 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 20 step grandchildren, 23 step great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Phillips of Mt. Airy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eddie McKinney of Mt. Airy; Robert and JoAnn McKinney also of Mt. Airy; Donald and Bonnie McKinney of Toast; Charles and Jenny McKinney of Beaufort, TX; Betty McKinney of Mt. Airy and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Burnette McKinney and a brother, Merle McKinney. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 10, 2012, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Jimmy McCraw and Rev. Johnny Johnson. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436, Masonic Burial Rites by Salem Masonic Lodge 289 AF & AM. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to special caregivers, Debra Beaver, Lisa Wolford, Roy West and to all the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care for the exceptional care given to Mr. McKinney during his extended illness.
