Mr. J. Curtis Baliles

Mr. J. Curtis Baliles, age 93 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on May 20, 1916 to the late James Lee and Emma Shelton Baliles. In addition to his parents, Mr. Baliles was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyrus Baliles and Herman Baliles, and an infant brother. He had served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post 7800. He was a member of Fairystone Baptist Church where he was the oldest charter member, a former deacon and former song leader.
Mr. Baliles is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Grogan Baliles of the home; one daughter, Joan Baliles Achord and husband, Cecil, of Virginia Beach; and two sisters, Eva Agee and Dorothy Shank, both of Roanoke.
Funeral services for Mr. Baliles will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Fairystone Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
