Mr. James Tasville "J.T." Akers, age 87 of Woolwine, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Floyd County on April 1, 1922 to the late Horace Chymer and Lena Altizer Akers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Akers was preceded in death by one brother, Julian Akers and one sister, Lucille A. Duncan. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren and a long time attender of Woolwine United Methodist Church. He had served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II with the 529th Fighter Squadron and the 311th Fighter Group, receiving several medals including the Asiatic Pacific Theater medal with 3 bronze stars, Victory WWII metal with bronze star and the 14th Air Force Flying Tiger patch. He had retired from J.P. Stevens.
Mr. Akers is survived by his wife, Lucille Harris Akers of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Laura A. and Tom Holmgaard of Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, J. Brian and Trinh Akers of Woolwine; one granddaughter, Kelsey Holmgaard and two grandsons, Emory Holmgaard and Issac Holmgaard, all of Roanoke; one sister, Frances A. Weeks of Floyd; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mr. Akers will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Woolwine United Methodist Church with Pastor Lil Geibs officiating. Burial will be private. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. If desired, memorials may be made to Woolwine United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 74, Woolwine, Virginia 24185 or to Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, 3883 Alum Ridge Road, N.W., Floyd, Virginia 24091. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.
