Mr. James E. Gregory, age 93 of Stuart passed away Friday at Select Specialty Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Patrick County on May 18, 1921 to the late Edward Columbus Gregory and Mary Alice Massey Gregory. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Wise Gregory; five brothers, Paul, Columbus, Guy, Ralph, and Jesse Gregory; and four sisters, Kathleen Gunter, Lessie Thomason, Daisy Byrd, and Eleanor Gunter. Mr. Gregory had served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was one of the original crew members of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet that shot down more enemy aircraft than any other battleship. He always had a love of animals and their care would always come before his. He loved to ride 4-wheelers and was even doing so at the age of 92.
Surviving are three sons and daughters in law, Dennis S. and Kathleen Gregory of Stuart, Steven W. Gregory of Chicago, IL, Jay E. and Donna Gregory of Stuart; eleven grandchildren, Gabriel, Monica, Michael, Mary Beth, Veronica, Danny, Corinna, Christal, Cora, Richard and Joey; numerous great grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Gregory of Stuart; and one sister, Myrtle Gregory of Stuart.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014 at 11 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Revs. Wayne Moore and Buford Jessup officiating. Burial will follow in the High Point Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
