Mr. James Hayden Smith

Mr. James Haden Smith, 84, of Mt. Airy passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born in Surry County on March 30, 1933 to the late Vella Wade and Elzy Reagin Smith. Mr. Smith was owner of B&J Hosiery and was a lifetime member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, a member of Bannertown Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years, a member of the Bannertown Ruritans. Mr. Smith proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1954 – 1961. Left to cherish his memories are a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy Smith Huffman and Ralph; special niece Nikki Hull and her husband Eric; special great-nieces, Hayden Grace and Kaylynn Anna Hull; Godson, Adam Haynes as well as a very special friend Joann McMillan; nieces and nephews, Mike Haynes, Jerry Smith, Larry Smith, Susie Gilley, Billie Lynn Staples, Maria Todd, Crystal Hatley, Benjie Hiatt, Craig Hiatt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Hiatt Smith; a sister, Gloria White; two brothers, Billie Smith and Jerry Smith Sr. A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Skyline Memory Gardens with services conducted by Rev. Harry Sammons. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time to leave for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church C/O Tina Mooney 129 Mark Street Mount Airy, North Carolina, NC 27030 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
