Mr. James Russell Smith Sr

Mr. James Russell Smith Sr., age 81 of Stuart passed away Monday morning at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Mt. Airy, NC on June 8, 1930 to the late Roy and Hattie Wagoner Smith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Collins, Sarah Simpson; and three brothers, Wallace, Chester, and Haywood Smith. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Moody Funeral Services in Stuart for 33 years. He was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church in Stuart. Russell was a beloved member of the community. His greatest joys were his wife, his children and grandchildren, working on lawnmowers in his workshop, and entertaining his many friends and family with his wonderful stories.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Sue Simmons Smith of the home; three daughters, Shannon Smith Cockram and husband, Larry of Woolwine, Laura Lea Smith Hutchens and husband, Barry of Stuart, Stephanie Smith Gray and husband, Sean of Roxboro, NC; three sons, James Russell "Rusty" Smith Jr. and wife, Nadine of Stuart, Scott Smith and wife, Sharon of Fort Mill, SC, Daniel "Dan" Smith and wife, Amy of Patrick Springs; one granddaughter, Hannah Smith of Stuart; twelve grandsons, James Russell Smith III "Trey" of Charlotte, NC, Taylor Smith of Blacksburg, Jesse, Kendell, and Drew Cockram all of Woolwine, Jordan and Jonathan Smith of Rock Hill, SC, Will and Wendell Hutchens both of Stuart, Michael Gray of Roxboro, NC, and Daniel and David Smith of Patrick Springs; a step granddaughter, Lindsay Brown and husband, Kirk of Durham, NC; two step grandsons, Allen Whitaker of Nashville, TN and Cameron Whitaker of Blacksburg; and two step great grandchildren, twins Eliza and Davis Brown of Durham, NC.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Ted Thisse, Rev. Jim Brackett, and Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Stuart Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, P O Box 1108, Stuart, VA 24171 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 22099 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Stuart, VA 24171.
