Mr. James Edward Spence, age 75 of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at R. J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on June 30, 1933 to the late Marvin U. and Annie Light Spence. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spence was preceded in death by four brothers, J.C., Herbert, Curtis C. and Clarence W. Spence. He had been a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Arizona, had served in the United States Navy during the Korean and Vietnam wars, and was a member of Stuart Baptist Church. He loved to work in his woodworking shop.
Mr. Spence is survived by his wife, Annette McCormick Spence of the home; one daughter, Barbara Taylor of Glendale, Arizona; three sons, Keith Spence and Bryant Spence, both of Glendale, and Danny Spence of Eden, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three brothers, Clyde M. Spence of Brawley, California, Pat Spence of Woolwine and Gary Spence of Alabama; five sisters, Evelyn Mitchell of Collinsville, Margaret Incognito of Poway, California, Juanita Balas of Clovis, California, Faye Bowman of Patrick Springs and Barbara Roberts of Stuart; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mike and Vicky Hutchens of Stuart.
Funeral services for Mr. Spence will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with Dr. Clint Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Mayo Mountain Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stuart Baptist Church, P.O.
