Mr. Jobe “Jay” “J.W”. Simmons, 82, of Mt. Airy passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born in Surry County on September 6, 1934 to the late Jobe and Dora Moser Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a well-known professional gospel bass singer. Jay loved his family and had a great passion for animals. He thought Kay was the prettiest thing he ever laid eyes on! He also adored all his girls, over-protective to say the least. He began his singing career at the age of 19, with his brothers, “The Simmons Bro.” He sang with great groups such as, “The Friendly Four,” “The Prophets,” “The Harvesters,” “The Sego Bros and Naomi,” and “The Plainsmen Quartet,” considered to be one of the best bass singers of all time, hitting a G note below low C, and hitting it smooth. He is survived by his wife, Kay Lambert Simmons; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Angel; Donna Nelson and Kevin; Wanda Peterson and Ted, and Jayna Lowe and Richard; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Swanson and Judy Simmons and several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by brothers, Elmo Simmons, Thurmon Simmons and Hampton Simmons. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Community Baptist Church Cemetery.
