Mr. Joe Dean Gardner, 71, of Mt. Airy passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born in Surry County on December 13, 1946 to the late Robert and Mary Lee Key Gardner. Mr. Gardner was retired from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company and was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church and loved his Lord Jesus Christ. He proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Gwyn Gardner of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Amy Gardner of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Michael Gardner, Rhett Dean Gardner both of Newport News, VA, Cameron Gardner of FL; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tim and Donna Gardner of Mt. Airy, Gray and Carol Gardner, Mickey and Carol Gardner all of Newport News; a brother-in-law, Wally Hunter of TX.; many nieces and nephews; special sisters-in-law, Christine Tate and Julie Gwynn. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by a son, Brian Gardner; a sister, Darlene Hunter. A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Solid Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Quesenberry, Rev. Randy Edwards, and Rev. Johnny Easter officiating. Burial will follow in Solid Rock Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to DAV Disabled American Veterans, 767 W. Lebanon St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
