Mr. Joseph Washington Callahan, Sr

Mr. Joseph Washington Callahan, Sr., age 72 of Mt. Airy, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012, at his home. Mr. Callahan was born in Surry County on December 15, 1940 to Joe Bailey and Lucille Barnard Callahan. He served our country in the United States Air Force and was retired from Safe Light Auto Glass. Mr. Callahan was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends. Surviving are his wife, Katie Gravley Callahan; daughters and a son-in-law,Missy Callahan of Gulf Port, MS. and Sonya and Glen Ganyard of Pilot Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Callahan, Jr. and wife Shayna of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Gavin Callahan, Freddie Huff, Cory Shelton, Kirsten Callahan and Santana Hull; a sister, Hilda Jones of Dobson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Suzanne Callahan of PA; Ricky Callahan of MS; Jim Callahan of TX; Bill Callahan of WV; Danny Callahan of MS and Dennis and Lilly Callahan of Charlotte. In addition to his parents, Mr. Callahan was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Calvin Jones. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM, Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Barry Clement. Burial will follow in Jessup Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 123. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. The family wishes to express a heartfelt thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and especially Ruth Handy and Bruce Gammons for the love and care shown to Mr. Callahan during his illness.
