Mr. Joseph Odell Jenkins

Mr. Joseph Odell Jenkins, 82, of Dobson, entered the Portals of Heaven on Sunday, April 7, 2013 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Surry County on August 4, 1930 to the late Burley Allen and Nancy Margaret Marion Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins was a retired farmer and a faithful, dedicated member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was a Deacon and a Minister of the Gospel. He will fondly be remembered as the "the chewing gum man" and his Christian work with the youth. Mr. Jenkins was a veteran of the United States Army having served our country during the Korean War and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving sisters and caregivers, Myrtle Wall, of Siloam, Martha Haynes and Vena Woodring, both of White Plains; six very special nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own children, Michael Holbrook, David Jenkins, Diane White, Mary McCreary, Sandra Snow and Jo Ann Sawyers as well as three very special men, whom he loved and raised as his own, Wayne, Robert and Bobby Potts; a sister-in-law, Leonita Jenkins, of Mount Airy and his special pets, "Roxie and Lady". In addition to his parents, Mr. Jenkins was preceded in death by his dear wife, Laura Louise Norman Jenkins and a special brother, Franklin "Dee" Jenkins. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at New Hope Baptist Church by Rev. Trent Lyons, Deacon Billy Wright and Eulogist, his dear sister, Vena Woodring. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday, from 6 to 9 pm where his body will remain to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service, and other times at the home of Michael Holbrook, 2596 Prison Camp Road, Dobson, NC 27017. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Jenkins' request that memorial contributions be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to the Memorial Youth Foundation of New Hope Baptist Church, which he founded, 818 Prison Camp Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His Saints.
