Mr. Kermit Ray Hutchens, age 73 of Spencer, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on January 8, 1940 to the late Thomas and Vesta Hill Hutchens. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hutchens was preceded in death by four brothers, Clifton, Rufus, Rayford and Terry Hutchens; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Hutchens. He served in the United States Navy and retired from DuPont with over 29 years of service. He was one of the founding members of the Moorefield Store Volunteer Fire Department, volunteering with them for over 20 years, and was also a member for over 20 years with the Virginia/North Carolina Ruritan Club.
Mr. Hutchens is survived by his wife of 55 years, Delia Sheppard Hutchens of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Hutchens of Spencer, Edward and Angie Hutchens of Spencer; one granddaughter, Kenadie Hutchens; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hutchens of Lawsonville. North Carolina, Ruth Hutchens of Stuart; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Curt Ashley officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
