Mr. Lewis Roger Berrier, 83, of 2979 Flower Gap Road, Cana, VA, passed away Sunday night, November 18, 2012, at his home. He was born May 22, 1929, in Carroll County, VA, the son of the late R.L. and Sallie Vernon Berrier. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, receiving a Purple Heart and Silver Star. Mr. Berrier retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Company receiving various awards for his many years of outstanding service. He was a member of Paul's Creek Baptist Church for many years, serving as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He and his wife currently attend Bear Trail Baptist Church. Mr. Berrier was a well-respected man in the community, volunteering with the Cana Volunteer Fire Department and Cana Rescue Squad and served as a volunteer for Northern Hospital of Surry County as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Berrier is survived by his wife, Mary Towe Smith Berrier of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy and Robert Mabe of Galax, VA, and Robin Lyons and Cindy Parker, both of Cana, VA; a daughter-in-law, Selena Jones Berrier of Mount Airy; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Denise and Randy Phillips of Westfield and Susan and Keith Gunter of Stuart, VA; two stepsons, Steve Smith of Cana, VA, and Chris Smith and wife Katherine of Ararat, VA; six grandchildren, Becky Haynes, Brian Hawks, Justin Berrier, Evan Mabe, Timmy Mabe and Gabriel Parker; three great-grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; a sister, Lummie McMillian; and beloved dogs, Lady and Buster. In addition to his parents, Mr. Berrier was preceded in death by his first wife, Mazie Madgelene Edwards Berrier; a son, Roger Lewis Berrier; and a son-in-law, Gary Lyons; sisters Lola Edwards, Lillian Willard and Lettie McMillian; and five brothers, Luther Berrier, Lawrence Berrier, Lonnie Berrier, Lance Berrier and Lois Berrier. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Holder and Rev. Tim Crotts officiating. Burial will follow in the Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
