Mr. Nathan Dale Draughn, age 65, of Mt. Airy, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in his sleep Sunday, July 16, 2017, at his home. Mr. Draughn was born in Surry County on January 25, 1952, to the late Lester "Dubus" and Cathleen Dawson Draughn. Mr. Draughn was a 1971 graduate from North Surry High School and right from high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. While in the Air Force, he met and married his wife of 42 years from the Philippines, Gizila "Jessie" Draughn. He pursued a career in auto body mechanics, leading to a job at Patterson Buick. He retired from US Airways as an AMP, airplane mechanic, after 9/11. Nathan Dale was known to many in our community as a kind hearted gentle man. In 2004 he had a major motorcycle accident, which left him with an Acquired Brain Injury that affected his everyday cognitive and motor skills that led to his decline in health. Nathan Dale will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Left to cherish his memories and carry on his legacy are his loving wife, Gizila "Jessie" Draughn of the home; a daughter, Ica Draughn-Eldridge and her husband Little John Eldridge; a son, Bruce Lee Draughn; two grandchildren, Zaylie Leigh Draughn and Ellisynn LeiNae Eldridge; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Junior Branson; a special niece, Kelly Branson; a sister-in-law, Marilou Griffith and husband Albert Griffith; nieces and nephews, Deanna, Charles, and Yvette and their family, a family of Funckadillas; an extended family in the Philippines and a community of Filipino friends; and his beloved dog, Mildred. In addition to his parents, Mr. Draughn was preceded in death by a half-sister, Linda Faw. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 22, 2017 in the Draughn Family Cemetery in Mount Airy with services conducted by Archie Easter with military honors conducted by VFW Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy. The family will receive friends on Friday night, July 21, 2017 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
