Mr. Oscar Lee “Sock” Haynes

Mr. Oscar Lee “Sock” Haynes, age 94, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Village Care in King. Mr. Haynes was born in Surry County on August 30, 1923, to John W. and Susie Flemming Haynes. He proudly served our county in the United States Army during WWII. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans as well as a member of the American Legion. Sock was a well-known baseball pitcher, having played Sand Lot and semi-pro baseball in the Surry County League. Later, he played professional baseball for the Mount Airy Graniteers in the Old Blue Ridge League in 1946 & 1947. Mr. Haynes was inducted into the Greater Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Surviving is a sister-in-law, Treva S. Haynes and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Haynes, Katherine Haynes, and Clara Brown; and by brothers, John Haynes, Jr. and Tony Haynes. There will be no formal service or visitation, although anyone is welcome to come by Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy to pay their respects. Moody Funeral Home is assisting the family.
