Mr. Oscar Charlie Martin, age 93 of Stuart, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina on May 19, 1919 to the late Charlie Walter and Nannie Lou Kendrick Martin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by two sisters, Bealie Martin and Eva Dale Oliver; and three brothers, Ed Martin, Webb Martin and Richard "Hump" Martin. He had served in the United States Army during World War II, was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church, and had retired from Bassett Furniture.
Mr. Martin is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Olin Pendleton of Stuart, Peggy and Edward Haynes of Stuart, Betty Sue Martin of Patrick Springs, Sandra Akers and Junior Penn of Spencer; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Gayle Martin, Kenneth and Ann Martin, Lonnie and Angie Martin, all of Bassett; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Mamie Nunn of Martinsville.
Funeral services for Mr. Martin will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Dr. Joey McNeill officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in the Martin Family Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. If desired, memorials may be made to Fort Trial Baptist Church, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, Virginia 24168.
