Mr. Ralph Hicks, age 91 of Stuart, passed away Monday, July 30, 2007 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Surry County, North Carolina on July 7, 1916 to the late Pete and Alma Jane Sutphin Hicks. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter Hicks. He had been the owner/operator of the Stuart and Galax Mercantile stores. Mr. Hicks was a longtime member of Stuart Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, Chairman of the Ushers, and headed numerous other organizations, he had served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was also a member of the Stuart Lions Club and the Coffee Drinkers and was known to the youth in the community as the "Candy Man".
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife, Janie Nelson Hicks, of the home; one daughter, Janie Ruth Hicks of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Ruth Mack of Columbus, Ohio; and three brothers, Billy Hicks and Jack Hicks, both of Mt. Airy, North Carolina and Bobby Hicks of Dobson, North Carolina.
Funeral services for Mr. Hicks will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with Dr. Clint Hopkins officiating. Burial will be held in the Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy at 2:00 p.m. with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
