Mr. Raymond Thornton Layman

Mr. Raymond Thornton Layman, age 94 of Stuart, passed away Monday, January 16, 2012 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart after a lengthy illness. He was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1917 to the late William E. Layman, Sr. and Mary Catherine Wood Layman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Layman was preceded in death by five brothers, William Edgar, Jr., Claude, Harry, Hoyte, and Kirby Layman, and a sister, Elizabeth L. Hall. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army who served in the Phillipines, and was retired from Easthampton Rubber Thread Company. He attended Providence United Methodist Church in Patrick Springs.
Mr. Layman is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lucille Handy Layman of the home; four children, Shelby Turner and husband, Junior, of Patrick Spring, Mildred Layman of Patrick Springs, Dee Dee Parrish of Eden, North Carolina, and Kathy Tompkins of Greenville, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Pamela Hopkins Stafford of Kernersville, North Carolina, Kenneth C. Hopkins of Patrick Springs; Michael Ray Hopkins of Stuart, Amy Parrish of Eden, Katrina Tompkins of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tyler Tompkins of Greenville, South Carolina; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister, Cornelia Vernon of Patrick Springs.
Funeral services for Mr. Layman will be held Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Westmoreland officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
