Mr. Raymond Alvis Roberts, age 87 of Spencer, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on August 20, 1923 to the late Thomas Jefferson Roberts and Roxanna Shough Roberts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by eight brothers, Alma, Willie, Frank, Hughes, Roy, Clyde, Esley and Noel Roberts; one sister, Cora Goad; and a son-in-law, Tom Shively. Mr. Roberts was a member and past deacon of Critz Baptist Church, was retired from DuPont after 38 years, and had served in the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife of 64 years, Annie V. Roberts, of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Shively of Spencer and Karen and Jeff Wigington of Rock Hill, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Tiffany Harbour, and husband Daniel, Tanner Wigington and Jeremiah Wigington; and two great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Harbour and Alainah Harbour.
Funeral services for Mr. Roberts will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Critz Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Hackler officiating. Burial will follow in the Critz Baptist Church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.
