Mr. Robert Allen “Bob” Edwards, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday morning, June 27, 2017, at Surry Community Health & Rehabilitation Center in Mount Airy. Mr. Edwards was born December 3, 1930, in Surry County to the late Charles Benton Edwards and Myrtle Doss Edwards Gammons. Robert served our country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he was a radio operator. He was a member of the Melody Makers Band that performed live on WPAQ Radio Station in their first year on air in 1948, before moving to Michigan to work as an Electrical Engineer with General Motors, Inc., retiring with 35 years of service. After returning to Mount Airy, he was a member of the Mount Airy Elks Lodge where he held several offices and was a member of Flat Rock Presbyterian Church where he served as Men’s Sunday School teacher for many years. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Terry Arnason, Mount Airy, a son and two daughters-in-law, James and Cheri Edwards, Hampton, VA, and Dee Edwards, Pace, FL; fourteen grandchildren, Angie and Josh Lewis, Tara and Michael Rebtoy, Johnna and Ilir Kaso, Megan Petro, Robert Fahrner, John Fahrner, Michael Fahrner, Holly and Richard Gutowski, Daniel Fahrner, Timothy Fahrner, Sarah Edwards, Mark and Heather Edwards, David Edwards and Caitlyn Edwards; two step grandchildren, Angela Arnason and Arthur Arnason; eighteen great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Wood and husband Kirby, Mount Airy; nephews, Alan Wood and wife Barbara, Mount Airy, Brian Edwards, Winston-Salem, and Mike Edwards and wife Glenda, King. In addition to his parents, Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his wife Lillie McBride Edwards in December; a son, Charles “Chuck” Edwards in November; a brother, Don Edwards; and a step father, Ralph Gammons. The funeral service will be conducted, Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Rev. Wilborn Rives officiating. Burial will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Surry Community Health & Rehabilitation Center for their love, care and dedication shown to B-O-B “Bob”, over the years.
