Angels in Heaven are truly rejoicing as Mr. Robert E Lee Shumate age 97, entered the portals of Heaven on Sunday, February 10, 2013 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wilkes on May 14, 1915 to the late Wiley and Venna Wyatt Shumate. Mr. Shumate was a retired carpenter from G.L. Wilson Construction and a dedicated member of Piney Grove Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted children, Brenda and husband Ray Freeman, Sharon and husband Johnny Caudle all of Dobson, Robert Junior and wife Jewel Shumate of Level Cross, Billy Shumate of Elkin, Bobby and Linda Shumate of Dobson, Deink Shumate of White Plains and Rev. James and Renda Shumate of Mount Airy; eighteenteen beloved grandchildren; a special granddaughter and care giver Bonnie Stevens of Dobson; thirty two great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shumate was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Tavie Frances Simpson Shumate; one daughter-in-law Gaynell Shumate; one granddaughter Kimberly Michelle Shumate; four sisters Annie Teague, Ida Long, Mary Perkins, Emiline Shumate; three brothers Ira Shumate, Oscar Shumate and Leonard Shumate.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday February 13, 2013 in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, with burial to follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery; the services will be conducted by Rev. James Shumate. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis on Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of his service at 2:00 P.M. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Shumate family.
