Mr. Robert Garland “Bob” Smith, 89, of Mt. Airy husband of Nora Leftwich Smith passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Saturday, February 11, 2017. He was born in Pilot Mountain, NC on January 25, 1928 to the late Robert E. and Ester Emma Smith. Mr. Smith was drafted into the U.S. Army during Korean Conflict, serving two years in active duty and continued reserve service for six years. While in the service, Mr. Smith worked at William Beaumont Hospital in Texas and became a lab technician and surgical technician. He earned a BS in Science and a minor in English from Wake Forest, and briefly attended Duke University. He received his Pharmacist degree from the University of North Carolina. He started out as a partner of Hospital Pharmacy and later bought it working there from 1958 until 1985. In 1985 he bought Smith Drug from his brother and sold it in 1990. He retired in 1992, but held his pharmacist license in both North Carolina and Texas so he could assist with relief work when needed until 2011. He really enjoyed helping anyone he could at any time day or night. Mr. Smith was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF & AM and served on the board of Centura Bank for 22 years. He was a member of the North Carolina Pharmacy Association and KAPPI-PSI Fraternity. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nora Leftwich Smith; and a grandson, Lee Smith Inman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Smith Inman; four brothers and three sisters. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Skyline Memory Gardens with Rev. Mark Muckler officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mt Airy Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Wednesday from 9:30 until 10:30 AM. Flowers will be accepted memorials may be made to The Children’s Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 N. Main St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
