Mr. Stephen Matthew "Steve" Burton entered the portals of Heaven on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Surry County on April 22, 1952 to the late Matthew Martin and Annie Lee Hayes Burton. Mr. Burton was employed as a Correctional Officer for the Department of Public Safety and a dedicated member of Union Cross Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Adult Sunday School Teacher. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of forty one years, Mildred Payne Burton of the home; a daughter, Stephanie Welch and fiancé, Irvin Reynolds of Mount Airy; his beloved granddaughter, Kendall Welch of Mount Airy; a grandson, Dalton Reynolds, also of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Tim and Cynthia Burton of Elkin; his mother-in-law, Gladiona Payne of Elkin and a sister-in-law, Audrey and her husband Dennis Sink of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Union Cross Baptist Church by Rev. Bill Faw and Pastor Darrell Hall with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at Moody-Davis Funeral Home where his body will remain until time to be carried to the church to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Special thanks to Wake Forest Baptist Health, Comprehensive Cancer Center and Radiation Oncology and the staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their loving kindness during this difficult time.
