Mr. Thomas Terry Shelor, age 89, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Sovah Health Martinsville Hospital from complications due to pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Crystal Arlene Hughes Shelor. He is survived by his daughters, Joy Hart (Charles) of Raleigh, NC, Jeannette Gore (Al) of Hillsborough, NC, Brenda Crawford (Jesse) of Ridgeway, VA, Carol Kestin (Phil) of Aiken, SC; and his sons, Gary Shelor (Marlene) of St. Stephens Church, VA, Terry Shelor (Regina) of Ridgeway, VA; his brother, James Shelor of Roanoke, VA; and his sister, Mary Hopkins of Collinsville, VA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Chris Shelor, Jamie Brown, Charlie Hart, Joni Crawford, Rachel Kestin; 2 great grandchildren, Caylee Hart, Taylor Brown; many nieces and nephews; and a beloved cat, Chevy.
Born on Jan. 2, 1928 and raised in Meadows of Dan, VA to Willie B. and Delphia Terry Shelor, he was a resident of Ridgeway, VA. In his early years, he taught school and coached high school basketball in Floyd County, VA. He met his wife in 1947 through an introduction by his brother. Their courtship was interrupted when he was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1950. He was assigned to the Oklahoma National Guard, Thunderbird Division as the #5 cannonier in the 5th Gun Section of Battery A, 189th Field Artillery Battalion, 45th Infantry. He served in Japan and Korea until he was discharged as a Corporal on Oct. 2, 1952, and married his wife, Arlene, on Oct. 9, 1952. He worked at Stanley Motors, Burroughs-White Chevrolet, People’s Life Insurance, and Bob White’s Chevyland where he was the service manager for 28 years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 18, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in the Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O.
