Mr. Thurman Elbert Joyner, Sr., 90 of Mt.Airy passed away Thursday, December 24, 2015 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born in Pitt County, NC to the late Samuel Rufus and Carrie Belle Smith Joyner. Mr. Joyner bravely served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was member of the Ruritan National and Zone Governor for twenty one years. He retired from United Technology and attended Holly Springs Baptist Church. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Willa Mae Roark Burcham Joyner; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamlia Wall and Tony, Debbie Casstevens and Dean, Etheriel “Cissie” Trivette and Lindy; son and daughter-in-law, Thurman Elbert Joyner, Jr. and Pam; step daughters an son-in-law, Carroll Ann Burcham Lane and Richard, Sherry Lynn Burcham Southern and Rockie; step sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Clyde Burcham, Charles Anderson Burcham and Tammy; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Janie Joyner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Joyner was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Florence Weeks; brothers, Linwood and C.A. Joyner and a sister-in-law, Mildred Joyner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Holly Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Wayburn Mosley and Chaplain Ricky Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM where the body will remain until the time to be taken to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 400, Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or Holly Springs Baptist Church, 347 Holly Springs Church Rd., Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
