Mr. Vance Edward Cox

Mr. Vance Edward Cox, age 90 of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Cox was born in Surry County on December 16, 1921 to William Hobart and Minnie Etta McNeill Cox. He served as a Navigator in the United States Naval Air Corp during WWII. Mr. Cox was in the graduating class of 1949 from Elon College. He was retired from Burroughs Corp., now Unisys Corp, where he was known for his expertise in banking. Mr. Cox was a Life Member of the Elks Lodge #2061, was a member of Seapath Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Airy and a former member of First Baptist Church of Asheboro. Surviving are his devoted wife, Mary Madison Smith Cox of the home; daughters, Madison "Tippy" Mason and husband, George Mason of Gastonia, Neill Cox of Raleigh; a son, Vance Cox, Jr. and wife Ann Fearington also of Raleigh; granddaughters, Kathy Gallman and husband Charles of Gastonia; Suzanne Whatley and husband Michael of Fredericksburg, VA; a grandson Jonathan Cox of Raleigh; great grandchildren, Will and Mac Gallman of Gastonia and Michael, George and Mary Kate Whatley of Fredericksburg, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Moorefield and a brother, "Corky" Cox. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 to 6:00 at Moody Funeral Home. A private burial service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, The Children's Center at P.O. Box 692, Dobson, NC 27017; to the Alzheimer's Association at 3800 Shamrock Dr., Suite 999, Charlotte, NC 28215.
